RECOVERY CAFE

Recovery Cafe is a support center for people who have been traumatized by homelessness, addiction, and other mental health challenges. The program is designed to contribute to sustained recovery which is needed to gain and maintain access to housing, social and health services, healthy relationships, education, and employment. Specific program features include: free nutritious meals, Recovery Circles or guided peer-to-peer support groups, volunteer opportunities (including food preparation at the Cafe for members), and education.

They adopted an empowerment evaluation (EE) approach to assess program performance and effectiveness. In EE, staff and members are responsible for conducting their own evaluation, with the assistance of a trained evaluator. The evaluator serves as a critical friend.

The Cafe has already produced significant organizational findings, such as recognizing its transition from a “start-up” to a more mature organizational stage of development.

The Recovery Cafe staff have already responded to their evaluation findings by dedicating time to clarifying roles and responsibilities, and more clearly defining organizational structures and lines of communication.

Similarly, they have transformed retrospect satisfaction surveys into pre- and post-assessments linked with member attendance.  The evaluation findings demonstrate organizational learning and effectiveness.
